Books on my desk

I have spent some money on new books for my collection on the Victorian era and the Wild West. New and new – I often buy the books from other sellers than Amazon etc. Anyway the books I have got so far have made me muse a little.

Full-Colour Victorian Fashions: I gather this is the Hourt Couture that was during 1870 – 1893. Lovely pictures that full of details. There is lace, frills, bows and layers after layers of cloth. Some are really nice, some not. However how practical was these dresses to wear? How much dirt didn’t the train pull in? I guess this is why “ordinary” people never wore them?
Another book that I just glanced through (I am reading “The marriage bureau for rich people” and have to finish that first) is “What Jane Austen ate and Charles Dickens knew. It’s an interesting way of presenting the social stuff every one needed to know by using the litterateur written during the time. The glossary at the end covers much everything you ever wondered about when it comes to England during this time. It clearly shows that the rules of life show in what is written even if that wasn’t the purpose. It makes me wonder what the people of 2100 will think about us when they read the books written today. What on earth will they think of all us who writes fan fictions?

I have got two more books that fascinate me, mostly for all the old photos that are in them. One is bout the San Joaquin Valley, the southern parts but I guess it doesn’t differ that much from north. The other one is an illustrated directory of the old west. I have to admit I haven’t looked at these a lot yet but I will. Hopefully these will give me some inspiration to start writing, these books and the once I bought in London. Hmmm, I think I’m not totally honest here. I am inspired already I just need to find the energy. "Looking for inspiration" is just another bad excuse for not sitting down and gets the words down.

  1. The book about Austen and Dickens sounds fascinating. I have always loved books about fashion through the ages, it is a favourite subject of mine. I think those elaborate, Victorian dresses must have been very impractical and also very uncomfortable!
